More Startups Offering Abortion Pills in a post-Wade vs. Roe society?

@crunchbasewrote this fascinating piece on startups offering abortion pills.

It’s a testimony to how much I take our EU liberties for granted that I was surprised by the article. The irony of it is perfect.

In a post-Roe vs. Wade society, I feel that there’s hardly a more urgent problem that tech can tackle in the D&I space.

I had to look it up to confirm but “Today, almost all European countries allow abortion on request or on broad social grounds, and only a very small minority maintain highly restrictive laws prohibiting abortion in almost all circumstances.

The standard practice is to legalize abortion on request or broad social grounds, at least in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Almost all countries also ensure that abortion is legal throughout pregnancy when necessary to protect a pregnant woman’s health or life.”, says reproductiverights.org.

As I said, the irony of this startup trend in the US isn’t lost on me:

“Republicans have publicly cheered the decision and, in some instances, displayed yet again their lack of knowledge about the human reproductive system that they seek to legislate.”, says Buzzfeed.

I find it interesting and ironic that it’s capitalism and a free market, often promoted in the republican camp, that comes to the rescue now.

As Republicans lobby for a smaller government with more power to the people, it’s precisely those people that are now pivoting their startups and companies to provide medical care to women seeking an abortion.

“Medication abortion is currently in a bit of a gray legal area. While states now can ban abortions, mifepristone [one of two drugs necessary for abortion] is approved by the FDA.

On June 24, Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement that, ”states may not ban Mifepristone based on disagreement with the FDA’s expert judgment about its safety and efficacy.”, Crunchbase states.

Interested to see how this develops.
